Will CeraVe be the aid to my eczema woes?
I have shared on my YouTube channel and Instagram some of my struggles with dry skin and eczema. Some times of the year my eczema will flare up harsher than usual. The cold months, my allergies, and my constant hand washing at work makes my skin even more sensitive. I was sent a bundle of CeraVe goodies about a month ago including their Itch Relief skincare line which is catered to eczema prone skin. This was heaven sent and I was excited to see what if anything CeraVe could do for my skin.
This came right in time because upon my return to the states from Thailand my skin was at its most vulnerable. I had sunburn, my skin was peeling, my eczema had flared up and I even had hives breakout on my hands and arms. If anyone was in need of some T.L.C and moisture it was me!
CeraVe contains ceramides that help restore our skins natural protective barrier. The first product I tried was the Eczema Soothing Body Wash it claims to cleanse and calm dry, itchy and irritated skin. I was surprised at the formula of the body wash initially because it had an oil/serum like texture. I did feel that it was calming to my skin as well as nourishing. I also suggest showering with warm to slightly lukewarm water when experience eczema flare ups or break outs. I find it is more calming to the skin and doesn’t exacerbate the urge to itch. There was no scent or fragrance to it and on areas of my skin where my skin appeared crack it did not cause any tingling or burning sensation. The only thing I would change about this body wash would be the packaging. Because of its liquid oil like texture I would suggest it be in some type of pump.
After showering I would pat my skin dry and reach for the Itch Relief Moisturizing Cream. This cream was ultra rich and took some elbow grease to get it to completely absorb. I noticed that it relieved my itching and irritation but I did have to reapply in the morning due to dryness. On those days I reached for the soothing creamy oil. It contains safflower oil and while it is lightweight it is very moisturizing. I even noticed a sheen to my skin after applying it. I also have a large tub of the original CeraVe moisturizing cream that is soothing and hydrating. I love using that as well.
My eczema flares up really bad on hands when constantly washing my hands or during allergy season. For those moments when my skin was extremely irritated I grabbed the Hydrocortisone Anti-Itch Cream I found that it calmed my irritation and itchiness quickly.
My least favorite product was the Hydrating Facial Cleanser while it claims to be non irritating I found it to sting and irritate my most sensitive and eczema prone area above my lip. This area above my lip reacts to most facial products like masks when certain cleansers when I apply them so I wasn’t that surprised. I have found a holy grail cleanser which I’ll share in a later post that works great with my sensitive skin on my face.
Overall I noticed a change in the skin on my chest, arms, and hands. Areas that were once cracked or irritated have healed and become more moisturized with no visible cracking. I’ve used the CeraVe products over 2 months now and have found them to be helpful in relieving the irritation and abating my eczema flare ups. I started using these products when my skin was at its roughest and most sensitive so it will be interesting to see what extended use will do for my skin.
